MC at Home Unit 1: The origins of English

Tailored for individual or small group learners, the Maximum Classics at Home course features guided video lessons, printable workbooks, interactive quizzes and progress tracking. As well as improving English literacy, the course also provides a solid foundation for the further study of Latin using established 11+ courses.

In Unit 1 we explore the close ties between modern English and ancient languages. And then we start learning some Latin.

MC at Home Unit 1: The origins of English

Unit 1 Lesson 5: Key vocabulary and grammar

The final lesson summarises the unit’s grammar and vocabulary learning. We also make our own mini dictionaries and recording the unit’s vocabulary in it before checking what we know in the Unit Quiz.

Unit 1 Lesson 4: How English works… and how Latin does

So far in this unit, we’ve learned about the similarities between Latin and English. In this lesson we explore how English puts words together to make sentences, and how Latin does it differently.

Unit 1 Lesson 3: Latin gets everywhere in modern life

Let’s extend our word detective skills and discover how many of the things we see around us – and not just their names – have their roots in the worlds of Rome and Ancient Greece.

Unit 1 Lesson 2: Latin, Greek and science

The Latin language borrowed a lot from Ancient Greek… and so have modern scientists. Knowing a little bit about Ancient Greek roots is a useful tool in understanding mathematical and scientific vocabulary.

Unit 1 Lesson 1: Where does English come from?

This lesson explores the links between the Roman Empire, Ancient Greece and modern times. We learn just why Latin is a foundational part of English (thank you, William the Conqueror!) and how Latin is at the root of so many modern words today.
